Temp of the Year

We very recently (10th November) hosted our 25th annual Temp of the Year awards in London. A unique event dedicated to celebrating the successes and contributions of our temporary workers who represent us across the city on a daily basis. The event itself was held at the Century Club on Shaftesbury Avenue and the evening saw Angela Mortimer Plc. recognise the achievements of six temps across a variety of categories, including the prestigious Temp of the Year award itself.

According to the CIETT the UK has the highest number of temporary workers within an EU context, employing 1.3 million, accounting for 5% of the workforce. The same study indicated that temps have traditionally been viewed by businesses as a short term solution in times of recession, however, there is now compelling evidence that the temporary worker has become a longer term problem solver in the years of recovery since our last economic downturn.

Over a seven year period encompassing the last recession the numbers of temporary workers in the UK have jumped by 230,000, meanwhile the numbers of their permanent counter parts dropped by 8,000. Frances O’Grady, General Secretary of TUC stating: ‘millions have taken shorter hours, temp jobs and zero hours contracts in order to stay afloat during recession and stagnation. The fact that casualised labour continues to grow during ‘so-called’ recovery suggests that the labour market is far more fragile than the headline figures suggest’.

There are a numerous benefits of hiring temporary workers. Firstly, they can be deployed at very short notice to deal with unforeseen demand, for example Christmas or the end of financial year. From a businesses perspective temps reduce fixed costs associated with a permanent hire. As well as this, temps offer employers the opportunity to ‘try out for size’ before making a final hiring decision. This is something that works both ways….

FSCA CEO Julia Kermode commented on ONS Labour market figures published May 16: ‘Today’s figures clearly demonstrate just how important the flexible workforce is to UK Plc. With the uncertainty around the EU Referendum, companies seem to be turning to temporary workers for help, and true to form, the flexible workforce is keeping the economy running’. Kermode finished by acknowledging the changing nature of the workforce, emphasising the importance of the government taking note of these trends and working harder to support the flexible contingent.

With all this in mind a Temp of the Year awards evening seems rather poignant doesn’t it? The ceremony included six awards and a record 55 nominations from our clients.. Sarah Conlon was award Team Assistant of the Year, Jessica Gill the Administrator of the Year, Madi Maxwell was the Receptionist of the Year and Mary Maling the PA of the Year. Debbie Fletcher-Biles was recognised in the special category ‘Above and Beyond’, nominated by the Angela Mortimer staff. Awarded by her consultant Mary Goodall, Debbie has come to be known as ‘the saint’ for her obdurate and outstanding service in remarkably tough scenarios.

Congratulations to Laura Draper who took home the biggie, Temp of the Year. The client in question commented within their nomination: ‘from the get go Laura has been pro active, cheerful and determined. It is easily forgotten that she is a temp rather than a permanent employee – it feels like she’s been here for years. She has become a known face amongst the company, which is remarkable given the companies size’.

The client was ecstatic that Laura had been honoured in this manner and have since offered her a fixed contract as an HR Administrator, much to the delight of all involved.
